Forecast Discussion

000 FXUS65 KMSO 191006 AFDMSO Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Missoula MT 406 AM MDT Fri Apr 19 2019 .DISCUSSION...Expect a warm day today with temperatures near 70 across western Montana to the 80s in the lower Hells Canyon in Idaho. Showers and thunderstorms will develop by this afternoon and bring a chance for heavy rain, lightning and gusty outflow winds. There is a chance that the most intense thunderstorms may have small hail. A cold front will slow down as it tracks south this evening and overnight. This will bring moderate to heavy rainfall for a period across central Idaho. All the rain expected will cause creeks to swell up and the threat for mudslides will be heightened. The weather system will be slow to move out of the region through Sunday morning. This means that rain showers will continue and then taper off from north to south by Sunday. Dry and warming conditions are anticipated across the Northern Rockies Monday and Tuesday. The dryness will be temporarily interrupted by a shallow, fast storm system moving across the region on Wednesday. There is a chance of rainfall for much of the region during this time, however gusty winds appear to be more likely than appreciable rainfall. Models suggest that upper level flow over the Northern Rockies will gradually turn southwesterly Thursday through next weekend. Embedded waves depicted in this southwest flow may be enough for diurnal light rain showers over the region. This late week/weekend period does not appear to be a very wet period, however temperatures will cool over time. && .AVIATION... Clouds will increase and lower over Northern Rockies air space during the next 24 hours, as a wet storm system approaches the region. Terrain obscurations will become widespread after 19/2100Z, as thunderstorm activity increases along the Bitteroot Crest (Idaho-Montana border south of KMSO). KMSO terminal has a low chance of a vicinity thunderstorm developing around 20/0000Z. Winds throughout the region may gust over 40 knots near a thunderstorm, with small hail also present. All terminals are anticipated to have wind gusts 20-30 knots, even in ...
